Save the Date!! Dungeness crab season has officially opened and our Annual Crab & Pasta Feed fundraiser in partnership with Casa Orinda is on!  Take-Out or Dine-In! Now through February 25, you can place your take-out or dine-in order for a delectable fresh-off-the boat crab feast that includes cracked crab, pasta, Caesar salad, garlic bread and dessert!   Cost is $80 per person for take-out or $85 per person for dine-in patrons. $20 of each purchase will go to help support Orinda Rotary's programs, such as the Contra Costa/Solano Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, and many more community projects. 

Take-Out Orders will be ready for pick-up on Tuesday, March 3 between 4:00 - 6:30 PM at Casa Orinda. Dining-in seating will be available at either 5:30 or 6:30 PM at Casa Orinda.  A cash bar will be open for those dining in and corkage fees waived for those bringing their own wine.  Those dining in will also want to find parking on the street as the restaurant parking lot will be used for take-out order pick-up.

On January 28, we inducted six new members from our newly formed Orinda Rotary Satellite Club: Jim Breedlove, Scott Chritton, Sylvia Jorgensen, Kristen Southworth, Bill Waterman, and Debbie Wiener.  Welcome to Rotary!  We are proud to have you as members and look forward to your participation and fellowship!

The Devil Mountain Chorus sent a quartet to our meeting on February 4 and they regaled us with classic Barbershop tunes, such as “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “Goodbye My Coney Island Baby.”  Their remarkably close harmonies impressed us all – and even more so when they told us that, as a foursome, they had never previously performed together.  Singers included Bill Dunn (Baritone), Don Nelson (Bass), Jim Stenson (Tenor) and Dick Ahern (Lead-Melody). The Devil Mountain Chorus offers Singing Valentines for those trying to think of something special for their special someone.  Each $60 package includes a personalized serenade at a location of your choosing (within Contra Costa and Alameda Counties), plus a box of Sees chocolates and a long-stemmed red rose.  More information is available here.

The annual 4-Way Speech Contest, featuring student speakers from Miramonte’s very successful Public Speaking program, was held at our meeting on January 28.  Under the tutelage of Kristen Plant, the Miramonte program produces many award-winning young orators.  Two students, Cecelia  (Cece) Andrews and Sydney Mays joined us and each gave a well-constructed, well-presented argument using Rotary’s 4-Way test as the basis for support of their position:

• Is it the Truth ?
• Is it Fair to all concerned?
• Will it build Goodwill  and Better Friendships?
• Is it Beneficial to all concerned ?

On January  21, we welcomed Shawn Sladek, Senior Vice President of Wealth Management at Merrill Lynch, Walnut Creek, to discuss how the end of government stimulation is effecting the markets, as well as investing trends for 2015. Shawn gave a thorough overview of sectors of our economy that appear to be performing well, along with a look at those that are underperforming.  A comparison of US markets versus those in the global sector was likewise presented.  Many of the topics included in Shawn’s presentation are included in this report from the Merrill Lynch Research Investment Committee.  Enjoy!

Our 2015 Community Crab Feed set an attendance record with nearly 100 attendees enjoying the all-you-can-eat banquet of fresh-off-the-boat crab, pasta and salad. fresh sourdough and dessert at Orinda's Masonic Lodge.  Tables were set with in festive red and white-checked cloths and each guest received a bib so they could really dig into their Dungeness!  Wine and cocktails flowed and a lucky raffle winner (Robert Berber's brother!) took home approximately 4 cases of wine (talk about an "instant wine cellar!").  As a consolation, guest Lisa Jorgens, won a "Best of Orinda" gift bag donated by the Orinda Chamber of Commerce.  Needless to say, a good time was had by all!  Congratulations and thank you to all who had a hand in making the evening a success: Jose Avelar, Sue Breedlove, Bran Yaich, and Charles Mounzer, with a special thanks to Marcela Avelar, Tony Sloane, Lance Cowles, Dave Goss, Jim Breedlove, Jack, Barbara and Evan Bontemps, Erin Bjornnson, Michael and Raya Walker, Sylvia and Eric Jorgensen.  A BIG thank you, also, to Frank, Gary and Tony of the Moraga Rotary for coming to our aid as bartenders for the evening.

At our January 14 meeting, Rich Knowles, President of the California Association of Grand Jurists, gave an enlightening presentation about our state’s Grand Jury system-what it is, how it works and who can serve.  California adopted the Civil Grand Jury model to allow for investigation of county issues of local concern.  They act  as unbiased citizenl “watchdogs” of local  government activities and operations.  Each county in California has a Grand Jury comprised of 19 volunteers selected by county judges through an extensive interview and application process.  See a copy of Rich’s presentation here.

While our time together was short over the 2014 holiday season, it was full of interesting speakers, fun and fellowship.

Ethan Elkin kicked off December with a fascinating look at the economic impact of global warming and the price we will all have to pay as we come to terms with regulations to control its spread and reduce its effects.  His presentation can be viewed here.

With Dr. Uta Greishammer, we took a closer look at stem cells – their origin, types and potential for revolutionary treatments of chronic disease.  It is a complex and challenging field of research that offers hope in the future for those suffering from illnesses ranging from cancer, to Parkinson’s, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and more...See her presentation here.

Our holiday party at the Orinda Country Club was a delightful mix of great entertainment, thanks to the Don Santos Trio, great food, and lots of fun with trivia games, prizes and sing-along. We welcomed our new Satellite Club members, too!  The OCC was decked out with beautiful holiday décor which added to the festive environment. A wonderful time was had by all.  Special thanks to Jose and Marcela Avelar, along with Sue and Jim Breedlove for organizing the evening, managing check-in and serving wine.  Thanks also to Art Roth, who gamely assisted me with singing duties, and to Evan Bontemps and Erin Bjornsson for being my “elves.”

Orinda Rotary has a new Satellite Club!  To accommodate those with a desire to join and participate in Rotary, but constrained by a work schedule that does not allow an hour and a half to two hours for lunch each week, our club formed a committee to launch a new Satellite Club.  The new club has met twice and will meet again at 5:30p.m. on Tuesday, November 18 at Dick Burkhalter's (137 Canon Drive, Orinda).  Current members are encouraged to attend to welcome the potential new Rotarians and to lend their experience and expertise to the discussion.

Welcome new Orinda Rotarians!  Our club has gained three new members over the past 3 months – Ken Jew, Don O’Dell and Soheila Smith.  Each brings a desire to give back to our community and a commitment to “Service Above Self.”  We welcome your participation in our club and look forward to your energy and engagement!

Late October and November programs to-date have included an update in issues facing the City of Orinda by our own Janet Keeter, City Manager; an enthusiastic pep talk about membership and what it means to be a Rotarian by former District Governor, Laura Day; and an inspiring story of helping children and families in crisis by Sister Ann Weltz  of the Bay Area Crisis Nursery.

Janet Keeter gave an interesting and informative update on the City of Orinda at our October 29  meeting. From roads and storm drains, public safety to public works, communication and crime, housing and development – it was a comprehensive overview on all the current issues. Former District Governor, Laura Day, joined us November 5 to talk about Rotary Membership.  It was a great reminder of why we joined Rotary in the first place, as well as a call to action to recruit new members and retain those who have served for many years.  She stressed the importance of keeping it interesting, finding new ways to do old things, being flexible and being creative.  And, she emphasized that we are not alone in our commitment to Rotary –  a great thing to do is attend other club meetings and the District conferences to see the full scope of the good works in which Rotarians are engaged.

Sister Ann Weltz  joined us at La Piazza where we enjoyed a delicious lunch thanks to our host, Charles Mounzer, and where we learned about the great work done by the Bay Area Crisis Nursery (BACN) in serving families who need short-term assistance with caring for children when parents are unable to do so. For over 30 years, BACN has provided residential care for infants, toddlers, and children up to age 12 free of charge to parents in need.  They receive about 1,000 admissions annually. Children typically spend an average of 10 days at the nursery, but stays can range anywhere from 24 hours to 30 days. They are open 24 hours per day, 365 days a year and services are available to any parent or legal guardian who comes to the nursery during a time of stress or crisis. BACN has two housing facilities-- a total of 4,700 square feet: the Nursery for infants and toddlers and the Dahlstrom House for older children. Both are in Concord. Facilities are manned by paid and volunteer staff (over 100+ volunteers) and funds to run the programs come from voluntary sources.  They receive no government funding.  BACN offers a much-needed, caring environment for children and offers support for parents who care, but temporarily cannot cope -- a commendable and inspiring undertaking.

Congratulations to Rhonda and Frank Darling who were presented with an award from the Little Flock Orphanage Foundation for their tremendous efforts in raising over $50,000 to purchase "Wheels for Little Flock," buses to transport the children.  Well done and well deserved!

Rotary’s “Dancing with the Cars” fundraiser was a sell-out success with 248 tickets sold and over 260 (including volunteers) in attendance.  The evening set a fundraising record of over $68,000. Rotary will distribute over $28,000 of the proceeds to our event partners: EFO, the Orinda Association’s “Seniors Around Town,” the Orinda Arts Council, the Orinda Chamber of Commerce, and the Starlight Village Players.  Monies will support programs in our schools, assist Orinda seniors with transportation, and support community arts and business. Rotary’s endowment will receive approximately $13,000 in incremental funding to be used for future projects.  “Dancing with the Cars” is Orinda’s largest community-wide fundraiser and, as a kick-off to the Orinda Classic Car Show, a great showcase for Rotary’s “Service Above Self.”.  Thanks to everyone who participated!

From Viet Nam to Pearl Harbor and the wilds of Alaska; from the wild scene of dating and sex after 60 to scenes from the California Independent Film Festival; from conserving our water resources to using them in a sustainable way to create locally grown wines; from healthcare at Sutter’s new hospital to the health of our Rotary District; and (finally) fun with clichés and a much needed group photo – Orinda Rotary has enjoyed fall programs covering a wide range of topics and interests.  Oh!  And we also managed to hold our biggest ever fundraiser, “Dancing with the Cars!”

Becky and Don Jenkins gave an inspirational talk about Rotary’s LN-4 prosthetic hand project and described the difference Rotary is making by providing basic, easy-to-assemble prostheses to individuals who have lost a hand due to accident or violence.  The effort has been life-changing, both in terms of their own experience  traveling in Viet Nam, but also for those receiving a hand and thus enabling them to lead more productive lives.

Rich Cimini took us through his trek to Alaska and other remote locations in search of rare and beautiful birds, while World War II veteran Mickey Ganitch recalled “the day that will live in infamy” as a very different sort of bird swooped down on Pearl Harbor and decimated the U. S. Navy, killing thousands of servicemen and precipitating our involvement in World War II.

Dr. Victoria Bentley shared her personal journey of discovery and related the importance of intimacy to our physical and mental well-being, while Edy Schwartz uplifted our spirits and piqued our curiosity about the films to be shown at the California Independent Film Festival.

Katy Foulkes of EBMUD discussed the drought and provided important information on what EBMUD is doing to boost resources, as well as what consumers need to be doing to reduce consumption. Meanwhile, Moraga’s Captain Vineyards is doing a remarkable job of producing grapes and making wine in a sustainable way that reduces water usage and trains vines to live in a water-restrained environment.

Jim Hickman gave an overview of Sutter Health’s newest state-of-the-art hospital with features to enhance comfort and encourage faster recovery, while District Governor Pam Gray paid a visit to our club, awarding several of our members with well-dserved recognition for their service!

Our own Peirce McKee regaled us with clichés galore –and provided some guidance on putting old saws to rest --and we enjoyed the musical stylings of Claudio Madeiros while posing for the camera.  

All in all a very busy and enlightening fall!  Go Orinda Rotary!

Former President Sue and “Dancing with the Cars” Chair, Barbara Bontemps, gave a presentation about Orinda Rotary’s Endowment Fund – why it was established, what it funds and where it is going.  Over the past several years, individual gifts to the fund are down significantly.  Our ability to continue to fund long-standing Rotary projects could be threatened if annual donations continue to decline.  Our big “Dancing with the Cars” fundraiser on September 12 offers an opportunity to help bolster sagging endowment revenue, but only if we have the full participation of Club membership.  Tickets purchased will count toward an endowment gift – and it will be a great evening of entertainment – a win-win for those who attend.

• Our own Horst Rademacher gave a fascinating overview of the science behind global warming which he categorized under three key factors (for a copy of Horst’s presentation, click here):

• An unusual data set: NOAA’s study of our atmosphere over time
• A molecule: CO₂

In the middle of the 20^th century very little was known about Earth’s atmosphere other than its major chemical components – i.e. 78% of the air we breathe is nitrogen, 21% is oxygen, .9% consists of noble gases (radon, xenon and the like), and the remainder trace gases such as nitrous oxide and ozone.  Water vapor is also a component and is variable from region to region.

Starting in the 1950’s, Geochemist Charles David Keeling wanted to measure the exact amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.  He knew that such measurements would need to taken away from cities and forested areas – he needed a “neutral” location where air would be mixed by global air currents and offer an accurate representation of CO₂ concentrations at any given time.  Thus, in 1957, the NOAA weather station on Mauna Loa on the Big Island of Hawaii was chosen.

Susan Garell, President of the Orinda Arts Council and this year’s Citizen of the Year, graced our meeting.

Sue Breedlove introduced Kathleen Day-Seiter, known as Kass, of Southworth, Chavez and Day-Seiter, LLD, making her second visit.  Kass’ practice focuses on elder law and estate planning. 

Club Treasurer Gary Wong provided an inspiring overview of his experience at the 105^th annual Rotary International Convention in Sydney, Australia this past May.

Rotary came to Australia in 1921 and today there are 34,000 Rotarians throughout the country.  Gary represented Orinda among the 18,000 Rotarians who attended from around the world -- all participating in what has become a "mini-United Nations" of people committed to making the world a better place.

From start to finish, it was an intense, fun, educational, inspirational and cultural experience.  Gary particularly enjoyed the seminars -- of which  90 were offered each day, ranging in topics from Clean Water Projects to Club Leadership. Workshops on Membership appealed to him especially, since they offered many ideas on recruitment and retention. 

Gary was one of 340 individuals who participated in the Sydney Harbor Bridge Climb, setting a new world record for the number of people on the bridge at once, as well as the number of flags from around the world displayed from the bridge at one time.  Each participant gave $75 to participate in the climb and all of the funds raised went to the Polio Plus campaign.

A special highlight of the convention, was the presentation made by Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who pledged $100 million toward the Polio Plus eradication effort - a huge investment to end this dreaded disease.  The challenge remains in conquering the disease in the few countries where it remains --Pakistan and Nigeria, for example, where the hurdles are political and cultural as much as medical.

Buddy Burke, President of Lamorinda Sunrise joined us, as well. Welcome Buddy! Buddy and Lamorinda Sunrise hosted an all-you-can-eat Grits and Shrimp dinner to benefit Las Trampas school for the developmentally disabled on Sunday, August 3.

Weylin Eng introduced his long-time friend and patient, Bob Yeager, writer, speech writer (for Chevron’s CEO) and journalist. Bob also worked for Chevron Public Affairs with yours truly!

Jerry Seibert had us welcome Don O’Dell on this third visit to our club!  Hurray! A new member on the horizon!

Gray Eliot introduced Carol Lousisell, Director of Community Engagement for Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services for Contra Costa County.  Carol joined the program last January after having worked with Catholic Charities of the East Bay and John Muir Health.

Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services were started in 1968.  Today, the nationally affiliated program has a $1.5 million budget and serves over 5,000 seniors in our area.  Forty-four percent of the seniors served lived alone,fity-seven percent are women and thirty percent are 80 years or older. The program has 7 full-time employees, 28 part-time workers and 800 volunteers.  In addition to in-home services and deliveries, they run six drop-in CC Cafés, which serve 200 meals per day in Walnut Creek, Concord, Pittsburg, Antioch and Bay Point.  The Bateman Café in Antioch, is where all food is prepared.

Jerry Seibert had us welcome Don O’Dell for his second visit. Don is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing and hiking.

Anniversary: Gray Eliot celebrated 56 years with Holly on July 13. Congratulations to you both and thanks for the $30!

Birthday: Bill Selbach enjoyed his 79^th birthday on July 22 by donating $100 to our endowment!  Thanks, Bill – and congrats on getting your trivia question correct: What song was played at the New Orleans memorial service for Jim Henson? (Answer: “When the Saints Go Marching In”)

Joe Jaconette introduced retiring Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools, Joe Ovick.  Joe has been our county superintendent for 18 years and has spent 45 years as an educator. He has a son who also serves as a school administrator, making him a member of the MAFIA- Mothers and Fathers of Italian Administrators.  Joe has deep roots in California – 4 generations of his family have lived here. They first settled in San Jose after arriving in American from Sicily under the Patron system, working in the Louisiana sugar mills to pay their debt, then homesteading in San Jose beginning in 1901.  Joe was the first of his family to attend college (San Jose State). Education was his chosen field of study and he held a number of teaching and administrative positions before being elected as Country Superintendent, where he has served four terms.

The County Superintendent position goes back to 1852, when the lucky appointee was given $100 and a horse.  The first elected superintendent took office in 1858 and the job became a state constitutional office in 1878. 

Today, Contra Costa has 171,000 students in K-12 schools, 8,000 teachers and a $1.2 billion budget.  The graduation rate is 85% compared to a statewide average of 70%.  Forty percent of students are in college preparatory courses.

BIRTHDAY AND ANNIVERSARY: Our treasurer, Gary Wong, enjoys two celebrations in July – his birthday and his wedding anniversary.  Unfortunately, Gary has immunity, but he was willing to try to answer President David’s trivia question anyway –“What two major events occurred in 1969 ?” Answer: Man landed on the moon and the Mets won the World Series.

JEAN LYFORD AT ORINDA BOOKS: Our meeting on June 25th took a different turn when, after our regular lunch at OCC, we traveled to Orinda Books to hear our former club president and dear friend, Jean Lyford, do a reading of her latest collection of poetry, "Waiting for the Wind."  The event was both moving and comical, as Jean shared poems written during her struggle with stage four breast cancer, as well as light-hearted anecdotes from her days as an educator and administrator in the Orinda Schools. The poems themselves offer astute observations of the natural world, along with deep psychological insights. One review states, "The process of looking back over a lifetime of memories to create a meaningful narrative of one’s time on Earth is beautifully portrayed in this luminous new work."

After the reading, Jean took time to sign her books and greet long-time friends and admirers one-by-one.  An article about Jean's pursuit of poetry as art and about what inspires her is well worth reading.

With tears in our eyes, but smiles on our faces, we are grateful to have had the chance to hear Jean's lyrical poetry.

Weylin Eng brought friend Ken Jew for another visit – keep coming, Ken!  At our meeting on July 16, we welcomed attorney Don O'Dell, a friend and guest of Jerry Seibert, Ted Pratt, architect and friend of President David, and speaker for the day, Dr. Joe Ovick, Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools.

BIRTHDAYS:   Frank Darling's birthday was on June 24 and he was the first victim of President David's resurrection of the Trivia Quiz. The question: What do you call two  physicians ?  A paradox.  Larry Olson celebrated his birthday on June 26 with a family BBQ and provided Rotary with $50 for the privilege! Charles Mounzer's birthday occurred on June 27th and he celebrated with a dinner among friends, Jose and Marcela Avelar.  Bob Peeke turned 85 on July 3 -- Congratulations, Bob and thanks for the $30!  

ANNIVERSARIES:  Fred and Bobbie Nielsen's sixth anniversary was on June 21 - the longest day of the year!  Hope it was a good one, Fred! Gerry Dzendzel and wife Jennifer celebrated their 5th year anniversary (the wood anniversary !!??!!) on June 27th and in honor of the occasion, Gerry gave $150 in her name to the Paul Harris Society.  Thanks so much!  Marshall Johnson and wife, Susan, have been married 18 years as of July 6, but Tony and Margret Sloane (married on July 9) beat that by a mile with 54 years of wedded bliss!  Gary and Annie Wong celebrate 37 years on July 17, but Joe and Lucinda Jaconette edge them out with 40 years together on July 20.  Congrats to all!

SHOULDER TO SHOULDER: Berkeley Rotary Projects help improve schools (and communities) in New Orleans and Mexico

Dick Marchick proudly introduced fellow physician Pate Thomson, long-time Berkeley Rotarian and Assistant Governor for District 5160.  Pate started the cardiac unit at Alta Bates Summt Medical Center and started the free clinic in Richmond.  His roots in Rotary go back a long way – his father was an early member of Orinda Rotary and his ties to Orinda are strong His wife attended school at what is now our Community Center and his dad was Orinda’s first “Citizen of the Year”!

Shoulder to Shoulder is a project inspired by Pate’s sailing excursion to Mexico several years ago when he discovered the small town of Chacala just north of Puerto Vallarta.  Rotary had been in Chacala in 1996 when a North Carolina club helped build the town’s library.  In talking with locals, Pate discerned that there was still much that could be done to help the community.  Berkeley Rotary got on board and subsequent projects expanded the library, added a computer learning center, a kitchen to serve mid-day meals and a scholarship program, “Cambiano Vidas,” for high school students.  Every child in the town now goes to high school and many on to college.

After their initial push in Chacala, Berkeley’s attentions diverted to New Orleans where hurricane Kartrina devastated the Gulf Coast.  Their efforts there involved restoring Warren Easton, an inner-city high school.  The refurbishment took two years, with George W. Bush giving a post-Katrina address from the school and Sandra Bullock contributing funds for a new auditorium Today, the school is flourishing –100% of the senior class graduates and the school is rated A+ by the Lousiana state department of education.

FOURTH OF JULY PARADE:  Don't miss out on the annual Orinda Fourth of July Parade!  Marchers gather in the east BART lot at 9:00 a.m.  The parade starts at 10:00 a.m. If you have a convertible, we would love to include it! Drake's Brewery is once again supplying the beer for our booth in the park. Be sure to stop by after the parade!  NOTE:  There will be no Rotary Meeting on July 2!

The Annual District Bocce Ball tournament was a huge success -- and a lot of fun.  Thanks to all who turned out -- we had a good showing by making it to the quarter finals! This is especially notable since most of us only play once a year!

The Maynard Buehler Estate has given the Rotary Club of Orinda Endowment $63,405, This generous gift is in recognition of Maynard's many years as an Orinda Rotarian.  The Club is grateful for this tremendous support of our efforts and the Endowment Committee will give serious consideration as to how best to use the funds. 

Cal Shakes recently benefited from the generosity of the "Fab Five" local Rotary Clubs (Orinda, Lafayette, Lamorinda Sunrise, Moraga and Rossmoor) through a gift of $2,500 ($500 from each club) and some elbow grease to refurbish and install picnic tables in the grove and the Bruns Amphitheater.  President Sue and Jim,  along with Rudy Reich represented Orinda in the effort.

Peirce and Jo Ann McKee were married on Jo Ann's birthday 11 years ago. Peirce has followed Ann Lander's advice throughout the marriage: "1. Tell her often how much you love her; 2. Be nice to her family, so they tell her how lucky she is to have you!"  Thank you both for your $100 gift to the Endowment!

Don and Lorraine Sharman met on a tennis court in Golden Gate Park.  He was most impressed with how she chased the tennis balls across the court. They celebrated 64 years together!! Congratulations to you both!

Janet Keeter was pleased to celebrate the passage of Measure J with a 75% approval!  She was also pleased to introduce Mark Nagel, Orinda’s Police Chief since February of this year. Chief Nagel was selected from an array of impressive applicants.  He has served in the Sheriff’s Department, at the county-level as a custody sergeant, as an officer in Lafayette, a patrol supervisor and watch commander, attaining the rank of Lieutenant in 2012.

Orinda’s police department has eleven officers, two sergeants, a parking enforcement officer, an office assistant, and a chief. Dan Lawrence continues to act as an advisor to the department, as well.

Chief Nagel has three primary goals as the head of Orinda’s police:

• Improve and increase communication within the community
• Upgrade equipment for the department
• Increase education and training opportunities for both staff and residents.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR:

Joe Jaconnette was pleased to introduce Kirsten Theurer, principal of Del Rey School, and Trish Newhart, the Orinda Union School District’s “Teacher of the Year.”  Ms. Newhart is first-grade instructor and a ‘teacher of teachers” within OUSD, providing in-service training and support for fellow teachers.  She is a strong advocate of the new Common Core Standards, which encourage the integration of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills across subject areas .  Her first graders recently were introduced to the scientific method during a study of isopods (pill bugs!), wherein they designed, constructed, observed and presented their findings as to whether the bugs preferred a light or dark environment. Congratulations, Trish!

RAY BERGEZ:  Peirce McKee announced that Ray is recuperating in Manor Care over in Tice Valley.  He is not walking yet, but is receiving daily physical therapy and hopes to return home soon.

THE ANNUAL DISTRICT BOCCE BALL TOURNAMENT:  Join us for a fun day of friendly competition between area Rotary clubs at Waterfront Park in Martinez, this Saturday, June 14 at 9:30 a.m.  It’s great fun and food and drinks are provided!

FOURTH OF JULY: Jackie Horwitz is looking for members with convertibles to drive in the 4^th of July parade. Members should arrive at the East BART parking lot around 9:30 a.m. to march. Wear your Rotary shirts and be sure to wear sunscreen and bring a hat! The beer booth will be up and running in the park after the parade, so be sure to stop by!

WHOOPING COUGH ALERT: Dick Marchick reminded us that whooping cough (pertussis) is on the rise and that your childhood vaccine (if you had one) is probably no longer effective.  It is very important to protect yourself.  Ask your doctor about getting the DPT (diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus) vaccine.

From virtual currency to the chemical composition of the fragrance of spring blooms, from County-wide to Orinda-Rotary-centric issues, May was an interesting and informative month for our members!

Dennis Furimai of Lamorinda Sunrise presented a fascinating look at bitcoins, which are becoming a common – if controversial – currency in cyberspace.  Silk Road, the underground and anonymous marketplace where drugs and other illegal products are traded, accepts bitcoins as a matter of course.  More and more legitimate online retailers are accepting bitcoins, as well, and bitcoins themselves are being traded much like other standard world currencies.  The value of bitcoins, however, is extremely volatile.  Because of this, the U. S. Treasury Department, along with many other foreign governments, is concerned about their potential effect on the value of legitimate currencies, as well as money laundering and speculation. For more information about bitcoins, here is a copy of Dennis’ presentation.

Our own resident chemist, Sylvia Hua, was pleased to introduce us to Dr. Margareta Sequin, a PhD Biochemist who explained how plants evolved to exude fragrances both entrancing and offensive in order to attract pollinators and repel predators.  The chemical complexity of fragrance is based entirely on the combination of carbon atoms with other elements, which can now be reproduced in artificial form for the manufacture of perfumes, soaps, cleaning products, cosmetics and more.  The use of fragrances goes back millennia, however, and studies have shown that aromas have a potent effect on human behavior (i.e. attracting the opposite sex) and on memory (i.e. Grandma’s kitchen). 

ROTARY FIELD DAY:  263 students from Orinda's four elementary schools participated in the 65th annual Rotary Field Day on May 10 -- a 30% increase!  Among these, 106 were from Del Rey School, where the event has traditionally been hosted.  Winners included:

It was a full house at the Orinda Community Center as Rotary welcomed mayor Sue Severson, Councilmember Victoria Smith, County Supervisor Candace Anderson, and Justin Barber (representing State Senator Mark DeSaulinier) to our annual State-of-the City luncheon.

Preseident Sue welcomed everyone and introduced Sylvia Jorgensen and Candace Kattenburg, President and Executive Director of the Orinda Chamber of Commerce, who presented Rotarian Cyndi Girgis with their "Businessperson of the Year" award.  Supervisor Anderson and Mr. Barber each honored Cyndi with a certificate of recognition from the county and state, respectively, thanking Cyndi for her years of service to our community. Cyndi has lived in Orinda for 37 years and opened Hilton House in the year 2000 after realizing there was a need here for an upscale consignment store featuring name-brand furnishings, home decor and accessories, as well as vintage estate jewelry.  Her business thrives thanks to her personalized service and a dedicated staff that includes: Dee, Rita, Jan, Kesha and Cory.

President Sue then introduced Mayor Severson, who took a moment to recognize her fellow elected officials (previously mentioned), as well as OUSD dignataries, Superintendent Joe Jaconette, former Superintendent Frank Brunetti and board member Tyson Krumholtz.  She then briefly turned the program over to Steve Harwood, who introduced 2014 Lamorinda Idol runner-up and Miramonte student, Eleanor Roder, to sing the uplifting "We're All in This Together."  She had us all on  our feet and singing along -- a perfect mood setter for Mayor Severson's presentation.

Highlights from the past year included Orinda's ranking as the 2nd "Friendliest City in America" by Forbes magazine, the beginning of construction at the new Eden Senior Housing Project and Orinda Grove, continued growth at the Wilder development, as well as the opening of the long-awaited Manzanita bridge replacement.  

The Eden Housing Project will include 67 units for which there are already over 700 applicants--152 of whom are Lamorindans. Pulte's Orinda Grove is well underway with a planned 73 homes (8 below market rate), new ball fields and a new Orinda Union School District office.  Wilder has five homes occupied, with an additional five under construction and 20 more to be completed by year-end. Three out of five of the community ball fields are also in use at Wilder.

Orinda Rotarian Linda Delehunt has tossed her proverbial hat in the ring for a run at becoming the next Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools.  Linda has an extensive background in education, having served at both the state and local levels and is hoping, if elected, to  make positive changes while facing some major challenges.

Linda, a Cal graduate, received her Masters in Education at Cal State East Bay and subsequently obtained her Doctorate (Ed.D) at the University of the Pacific in Educational Leadership and Administration.  She went on to a challenging career as an elementary school principal in the West Contra Costa Unified School District, followed by postions managing state and federal projects for Berkeley Unified and as a consultant for the California State Department of Education.  She has published several articles about effective leadership and its influence on the academic performance of low-income students and school communities.

Her platform has three primary planks: "Trounce Truancy," "Find and Fix Faulty Systems," and "Meet the Unique Needs of Each Child."

"Trounce Truancy" recognizes the devastating effect truancy has not only on students, but on school systems and communities, as well.  Truancy has reached epidemic proportions in California and certain areas of Contra Costa:

• Truancy robs our schools of $1.4 billion a year in attendance-related funding
• It robs our economy of an educated and productive workforce
• It costs taxpayers in the form of numerous social services programs needed to deal with the effects of truancy (crime, drugs, gang activity, teen pregnancy, etc.)

Failure to address the truancy problem has long-term negative effects on the future of our country, state and nation.

Gray Eliot, our long-time liaison with Meals on Wheels, let it be known that they are in dire need of new hot pack food containers that are used for delivery. He asked the Club to consider donating the funds needed to purchase new containers and President Sue agreed that we could discuss this in the Endowment Committee.

A rip-roaring Comedy Night at the Orinda Theatre was held on March 7 and featured some of the funniest local comics around.  Great fun was had by all and thanks to everyone who turned out for this annual Chamber event!

The Citizen of the Year Dinner, held Friday, March 14, honored Susan Garrell of the Orinda Arts Council for her many efforts on behalf of that organization -- including initiating the Orinda (now Lamorinda) Idol program.  Congratulations, Susan, on your well-deserved recognition!

Our "State of the City" luncheon will be held at the Orinda Community Center on March 26 and will feature Mayor Sue Severson.  She will discuss the City's accomplishments and challenges over the past year and give us a preview of what's ahead -- including the proposed road repair bond measure. Our own Cyndi Girgis will be honored by the Orinda Chamber as Businessperson of the Year.

The 4-Way Speech Run-Off for competing high school forensics participants will be held Tuesday evening, April 8, at St. Mary's college and will be hosted by Moraga Rotary. Everyone is encouraged to come hear these talented debaters!

Dan Lawrence introduced Dr. Stuart Sweidler of the East Bay Hills Project, which details the history of the railroad, particularly the Sacramento Northern, the Oakland Antioch and Oakland Bay Shore Railroads from the mid-to-late 19th Century to today. BART is a benefactor of some of the early right-of-ways, as are other transportation corridors throughout the East Bay.

Dr. Sweidler described the routes through the East Bay into San Francisco that many of the early (mostly electric) trains took. Remnants of the routes, stations, and tunnels still exist today and can be seen via the photographs and diagrams posted on his website: www.eastbayhillsproject.org.

Lance Cowles introduced Woody Karp, Senior Project Developer for the Eden Housing Project currently underway at the site of Orinda's old library.  

Eden Housing is a non-profit developer that has been providing affordable housing for seniors and low-income families for more than 45 years.  They have provided homes for more than 65,000 people and they own and manage the properties, offering services to residents to facilitate their ability to work (in the case of families) or to age in place (in the case of seniors). After-school programs, transportation, social activities, are just some of the amenities offered and that help to create a sense of community within the development.

The project in Orinda is limited to those 62 and older and will consist of 66 one bedroom units.  There will be a manager, assistant manager and service manager on site.  The units will be offered for low-income occupancy based on a Contra Costa median annual income of $37,000 per couple.  Background checks will be done to ensure the safety of residents and the community.  Per the Fair Housing laws, units will be available to those who meet the income criteria and the background checks.

This is a $26 million dollar project, funded through a variety of sources.  The City of Orinda contributed the land and Union Bank is providing 55% of the funding through tax credits it will receive.  The balance of funding comes from other Contra Costa County programs. Vouchers through the Contra Costa County Housing Authority will enable renters to pay what they can afford as rates will be income-based.

On-site amenties will include a 750 sq. ft. Community Room, a community kitchen, computer lab, laundry facility, exercise room and possibly a beauty salon.

The site includes a 17 percent grade, so it was necessary to create a step-up design that would build into the hillside. The maximm height is 4-stories on the upper level, with 3 stories visible from the street below. Every effort is being made to screen the building with landscaping so that its size does not loom over the downtown.

There is already a wait list of 682 people who are interested in obtaining housing at the facility -- the majority of whom are Lamorindans. It is expected to be completed in September 2014.

February brought a variety of lively programs and outings to Orinda Rotary. Music filled the air at the Orinda Country Club at our Valentine's Day luncheon on February 12, when our friends from Open Opera treated us to a potpourri of classic arias, Broadway hits and well-known love songs.  From Bizet's 'Carmen' to Cole Porter's 'Night and Day,' from Bernstein's 'West Side Story' to his 'Trouble in Tahiti,'  the singers entertained in high style and humor.  Featured performers included Julia Nielsen (soprano), Lisa van der Ploeg (mezzo-soprano), Leland Morine (baritone) and pianist James Meredith.

Our first-ever Cabernet and Cabaret dinner/fundraiser was held on Valentine's Day at the Masonic Lodge and attendees enjoyed champagne, a 4-course chocolate-themed dinner including wine, plus a 4-set feast of romantic standards from the Great American songbook performed by the Don Santos Quartet and yours truly. Special surprise performers, Jose and Marcela Avelar, added a bit of Latin love to the mix , as well! It was a festive and fun evening!

Our speaker on February 19 was First Officer John Creech of the Mercy Ship 'Africa.' John, a graduate of the Maritime Academy in Vallejo and a naval veteran of the Korean War, has served on the Mercy Ships for many years.

The Mercy Ships were first launched in 1978 -- inspired by the SS Hope which was the first hospital ship of its kind.  The Mercy Ship 'Africa' is flagged in Malta, which allows the use of certified seamen from around the world to serve aboard the vessel.  'Africa' was originally built as a train transport ship in Denmark, but came into service as a hospital ship in 2007. It focuses its services on the west coast of Africa and countries must invite the ship into port to receive aid and they must provide security while the ship is moored.  In addition, host countries must arrange a place for crew members to conduct screenings.  The clinic is not able to treat chronic AIDS, cancer or cardiac patients, but instead lends its efforts to immediately treatable disorders and illnesses.

The entire crew, with the exception of locals who are recruited to handle in-port duties, is volunteer.  Locals who are hired to assistand are paid $5 per day -- a tremendous opportunity for those inured to earning on average $2 per day.  Acquisition of clean water for the clinics is a major challenge and fuel for the ship runs about $32,000 per day.  Rotary International has been a  major funding source for many years and aboard 'Africa' Rotary's support funded the computer lab, as well as 28 vehicles to transport crew members screenings held further in-country. 

Orinda Rotary Annual Citizen of the Year Dinner March 14th:  Come celebrate the accomplishments of Orinda's 2014 Citizen of the Year, Susan Garell, co-president of the Orinda Arts Council ,on Friday, March 14th at the Orinda Community Center.  Garell, who is largely responsible for the launching of the tremendously successful "Orinda Idol" competition, has been a devoted Orinda community volunteer for more than 15 years.  It's time we said thanks! Miramonte Career Night is on Monday, March 17: Orinda Rotary is proud to continue sponsorship of this decades-old Miramonte tradition, bringing top-notch professionals from a wide range of vocations together to answer questions, share experiences and inspire our high school students.  If you would like to volunteer to moderate one of the career panel discussions (it's fun!), talk to Rudy Reich or Jackie Horwitz.

Orinda's State of the City Luncheon, March 26 at the Community Center: This year's 'State-of-the-City" luncheon will be held at the Community Center, and mayor Sue Severson will report on a variety of projects and issues facing our community.

Our October 9 meeting featured long-time Club member, Dave Englehart, who led us through a delightful tasting of fine Italian Chianti Classico, a little "Super Tuscan," and some very nice Vin Santo at Charles Mounzer's very popular Orinda bistro, La Piazza. 

Dave is a well-established wine educator, having taught classes on "wineries of the world" for 20-plus years at both Golden Gate University as well as at the Orinda Community Center.  He began his talk by asking us if we knew what the traditional straw covered bottle of chianti is called.  It is a "fiasco"  -- or flask.  How it ever came to be associated with the word "failure," is a mystery.

He went on to explain that Italy is the world's largest wine producer with over 2 billion gallons per year.  There are 20 provinces and 94 designated wine areas.  Chianti Classico is arguably Italy's most popular wine and is typically produced in the region between Florence and Sienna, which is denoted by the famous black rooster or "gallo negro."  Legend has it that to settle a war between Florence and Sienna, the Duke of Tuscany demanded a race be held between the two districts.  Florence was represented by a white rooster, Sienna by a black rooster. The black rooster won the race and has from that day been the emblem of the region.

In the early days, Chianti production was unregulated and quality was poor -- hence the derogatory "Dago Red" characterization.  But in 1859, producers agreed upon a formula which defined the composition, alcohol content and aging process for Chianti.  That formula is still used today for Chianti Classico and it consists of 50 to 80 percent Sangiovese grapes (red), 10 to 30 percent Canaiolo grapes (red), and 10 to 30 percent Trebbiano and Malvasia (white) grapes.  The minimum alcohol level is 12 percent for all chiantis and 12.5 percent for Chianti Classico. Chianti Classico Reserva must be aged a minimum of 3 years in the bottle or wood.  Today, ItalianThese "super" wines often sell for $70 to $90 dollars per bottle.

President Sue asked if anyone knew the whereabouts of our Rotary projector and laptop  ?  It seems to have walked away...

Sue also announced that we are going to start taking member photos so we can update our roster online.  Gene Gottfried will be starting to take photos next week -- but if you have a relatively current photo that you would like to put in your website profile, send (or bring) to Barbara and she will upload it.

The Orinda Chamber is holding a mixer on Thursday, October 17, hosted by our new members, Angela Warren and Parveneh Poirier of Land Home Financial.  The event will be held at their offices in 2 Theatre Square from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Years of Service: Robert Berber is celebrating 5 years of service with Orinda Rotary.  Jose Avelar recruited Robert after one of the Reno Train Trips -- and he was hooked!  Robert continues the spirit of that original train trip with his Rotary Poker  (and Bridge) Nights.  Thanks for your service (and the $10!), Robert!

Marshall Johnson passed the 10-year mark with our club -- we are grateful for your active support, Marshall!

Induction of New Members: President Sue was pleased to introduce two new members to the Club, Angela Warren and Parveneh Poirier, of Land Home Financial.  Welcome, ladies!  It is great to have your support and involvement!  Sue presented both women with a red badge -- signifying rookie status until they complete the few requirements that come with the territory.  We're sure they will meet and exceed expectations!

Special Recognition: Dick Burkhalter presented President Sue with her very own "Rotary At Work" T-shirt, since she didn't have one to wear as a parking attendant at the annual Olive Festival at Wagner Ranch.  No doubt she will get a lot of use out of it!

Barbara Bontemps was pleased to announce that "Dancing with the Cars" was a great success for the club -- and the evening raised iin excess of $30,000. Lance Cowles extended a big thank-you to all of the club members who turned out for Tom Fitch Fishing Day at the San Pablo Reservoir.  It was a beautiful day and the kids really enjoyed their outing.

Robert Berber thanked all those who attended Poker Night -- It was especially nice to see Jose Avelar out and about since his hip replacement surgery! Ray Bergez was the big winner at Poker, taking home a whopping $15.00 (or so)!

President Sue thanked the volunteers who helped out at the NorCal Kids Triathalon on August 31 -- Dick Burkhalter, Jack Bontemps, Sylvia Hua, Lance Cowles, Joyce Hawkins.

Barbara Bontemps gave the weekly report on "Dancing with the Cars," and mentioned some of the wonderful auction items that will be included in the evening --  PROCEEDS OF WHICH WILL BENEFIT ORINDA ROTARY.  They include:

• A fabulous weekend of food and exclusive wine tastings high atop the Alexander Valley at the magnificent Croft Vineyard -- a private estate of incomparable beauty -- donated by Art and Edie Roth

Jerry and Sigrid Seibert were married in 1957 and celebrated 56 years if marriage in August.  Jerry met Sigrid while she was attending Pharmacy School at the University of Chicago.  She was too beautiful to resist! Congratulations, you love birds!

Gene Gottfried met lovely wife Phyllis in exotic Barbados while he served as an officer in the Navy.  She was there teaching Math on a Fulbright Scholarship. Their brains (and hearts) collided and they were later married in New York City.  It's been 56 years.  We wish you many more!

Jerry Seibert joined Orinda Rotary 23 years ago at the suggestion of friend and pharmacist, Harvey Kamian.  Jerry had been a member of Rotary in Oakland, but couldn't resist our charms once he attend our club's meetings.

A warm welcome to Sylvia Hua! Sylvia attended her requisite 3 meetings and in spite of everything, still wanted to join!  Yeah, Sylvia!  We are delighted to have this PhD biochemist and look forward to getting to know her better!

Mary-Elena Dochterman passed away on August 9 and a memorial service was held August 16 at St. Perpetua's Church in Lafayette.  Gifts in her memory can be made to the Rotary Club of Moraga Foundation.

Our own Jean Lyford announced that she is suffering from breast cancer which has metasticized, involving her bones and lymph nodes.  She is registered for Caring Bridge, which is a website that allows those who wish to help to sign up for delivering meals, driving Jean to appointments, and an ability to see how Jean is doing through her treatment. It is simple and free to register and a great way for you to show you care and keep in touch during this challenging time...

The District 5160 Conference will be held in Chico this fall -- October 18 to 20.  President Sue encourages all members to attend -- it's a great opportunity to see the scope of all of the things Rotarians do.

Miramonte students Lina Mathour and Patrick Houston visited us to share their experiences at this summer's Camp Royal and Camp Venture. Both agreed it was a terrific opportunity to hear great speakers, meet other students from around the state, and be inspired to incorporate Rotary's "Service Above Self" motto into their lives.
