Avid cyclist, David Miller, turned 50 and decided to take a bike trip with his big dog Max

across all 50 states! He did this in stages starting from San Diego and winding across the country to Sarasota, Florida, criss-crossing the countryImage and planning his travel route based on the seasons. He even managed to make it to Alaska and Hawaii --sans Max due to quarantine issues. It took one year, plus two weeks to accomplish and, in spite of meticulous planning, he encountered every type of weather from extreme heat to snow and spring flooding.

Besides the physical challenges (i.e. the Rockies), the most memorable parts of David's journey were the random acts of kindness he encountered along the way. Having been warned about crossing an Indian reservation in North Dakota, he was feeling uneasy as he biked in 100-degree heat, passing a car with two young Native Americans pulled to the side of the road. When they pulled onto the pavement and slowly passed, he became concerned about their motives. When they stopped a short distance ahead, he grew fearful as he pulled alongside -- only to see an arm extend out the window with an offering of water. This was not the only instance where virtual strangers offered a hand on his journey. He was gratified in the end that America is truly a nation of givers. And Rotary is a perfect example of that!
