Orinda Rotary led the March Madness fundraising campaign launched by our Rotary District 5160 for the Tutu Desk project.  This is a partnership through Rotary International and clubs throughout southern and sub-Saharan Africa to provide much-need portable school desks to students there. The collaboration has its genesis as part of the Centennial Celebration of Rotary in Africa.  Our club raised $2,250.

Personally initiated by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the project's key mission is to provide 20 million Tutudesks to African school children by 2025. An esmated 95+ million children in sub-Saharan Africa are affected by classroom desk shortages, which has a direct, ongoing and extremely negativeve impact on the development of the child’s literacy development and academic performance.
