In Memorium:
Long-time and much valued Orinda Rotarian Ed King passed away this past April. A memorial service will be held at Saint Stephen's Episcopal Church in Orinda on Saturday, August 3 at 11:00 am.
Our good friend and former Orinda Rotary President, Bob Wise also passed away on July 16. We are gathering to honor him this Saturday, July 27, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the home of his step-daughter Elizabeth Delahaye, 108 Silver Oak Terrace in Orinda (Orinda Downs area). Rotary was a cause near and dear to Bob's heart. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Orinda Rotary Endowment fund. Checks should be made to: Orinda Rotary Endowment and given to Gary Wong or mailed to Orinda Rotary, PO Box 44, Orinda, CA 94563. Please note on the check that it is in memory of Bob Wise, so that the club can acknowledge your gift on Bob's behalf.
Other Announcements:
President Sue acknowledged that some members had expressed their unhappiness with the lack of dessert to accompany our lunches at the Country Club. She explained that dessert would cost the Club an incremental $2 per lunch -- this equates to approximately $80 a week for sweets. OCC is allowing us to bring in our own treats, however, and that is why the candy has been a fixture on the tables for the past several weeks. Sue asked for volunteer bakers, but no one jumped in -- that is until Robert Berber's Alice said she would provide her famous chocolate covered peanuts next week! Are there any more dessert chefs out there??
President Sue talked about the "Learn It, Lead It, Leave It" brand of engagement in club activities she would like to develop. We have many talented people who tirelessly lead the same Club events year after year. Sue encouraged those fearless leaders to recruit a partner, let them shadow you for a year and then offer them the opportunity to take the helm the next year. Let's mix it up!
TGIF Fellowship Nights: With the help of several other gregarious Club members, President Sue is launching monthly TGIF Fellowship Nights (to be held the third Friday each month). These are just-for-fun, pot-luck get-togethers at members' homes to encourage friendship and to help us get to know one another a little better. Our first TGIF will be held this Friday, July 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Breedloves, 17 Via Las Cruces, Orinda. Bring an appetizer to share and join the fun!
Jackie Horwitz announced that she would be making a donation to our endowment fund in honor of her granddaughter who recently celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at a family gathering in Maui. Thanks, Jackie -- and congrats to your granddaughter!
