ANNOUNCEMENTS AUGUST 14 & 28
August 14:
George Block shared with us that Bill Selbach recently had a pacemaker installed and is doing well. Please send your good wishes to Bill.
Gifts to the Endowment in memory of Bob Wise total $1,050 to-date.
Mary-Elena Dochterman passed away on August 9 and a memorial service was held August 16 at St. Perpetua's Church in Lafayette. Gifts in her memory can be made to the Rotary Club of Moraga Foundation.
Our own Jean Lyford announced that she is suffering from breast cancer which has metasticized, involving her bones and lymph nodes. She is registered for Caring Bridge, which is a website that allows those who wish to help to sign up for delivering meals, driving Jean to appointments, and an ability to see how Jean is doing through her treatment. It is simple and free to register and a great way for you to show you care and keep in touch during this challenging time...
The District 5160 Conference will be held in Chico this fall -- October 18 to 20. President Sue encourages all members to attend -- it's a great opportunity to see the scope of all of the things Rotarians do.
Miramonte students Lina Mathour and Patrick Houston visited us to share their experiences at this summer's Camp Royal and Camp Venture. Both agreed it was a terrific opportunity to hear great speakers, meet other students from around the state, and be inspired to incorporate Rotary's "Service Above Self" motto into their lives.
August 28:
Dick Burkhalter encouraged us to sign up for the Nor-Cal Kids Triathalon, Saturday, August 31 from 8:00 to 11:00 AM at Miramonte.
Dick also presented President Sue with a couple of lovely souvenirs from his recent trip to Scotland -- a travel-sized bottle of single malt scotch and a cook book complete a recipe for Scotland's favorite dish, haggis (yum!).
David Pierce announced the formation of the Reno Train Trip Committee. He is looking for Ambassadors to promote the trip with other District clubs. The trip to Reno is scheduled for the weekend of February 28 (Fri, Sat, and Sun) this year and David hopes to register 175 to 250 Rotarians to attend. See David if you would like to help out on the Committee.
The Orinda Idol Finals will be held at the Orinda Theater on Sunday, September 8 and helpers are needed. Please sign up!
Tom Fitch Fishing Day is September 28! See Lance to sign up.
Joyce Hawkins announced that the OCC golf pro, Shim LaGoy, will be playing 100 holes of golf on Labor Day to raise money for the Folds of Honor program to provide scholarships for the children of our nation's vets. To support Shim's effort, Joyce distributed envelopes on the tables ibn hopes that some of our Rotarians might like to contribute.
The City of Orinda is offering Senior Trips and behind-the-scences tours for those over 65 to a variety of terrific places. Check it out on their website.
